Dematerialization vs. Rematerialization – What Investors Should Know

Posted on December 17, 2025December 19, 2025 by Admin

What is Dematerialization?

Dematerialization is the process of converting physical share certificates into electronic form, held in a Demat Account with a SEBI-registered Depository Participant (DP).

Benefits of Dematerialization:

  • Eliminates risk of loss, theft, or damage to physical certificates
  • Enables faster transfer and settlement of securities
  • Ensures direct credit of dividends, bonuses, and rights shares
  • Simplifies portfolio tracking and compliance

Procedure:

  1. Open a Demat Account with a SEBI-registered DP
  2. Submit the Demat Request Form (DRF) along with original share certificates to your DP
  3. DP forwards the request to Indus Shareshree for verification
  4. Upon approval, shares are credited to your Demat Account and debited from your physical folio
  5. Process typically takes up to 21 days, subject to document completeness

What is Rematerialization?

Rematerialization is the reverse process — converting electronic shares back into physical certificates. This is usually done when an investor prefers holding physical shares or is closing their Demat Account.

 Procedure:

  1. Submit the Rematerialization Request Form (RRF) to your DP
  2. DP forwards the request to Indus Shareshree for processing
  3. Fresh physical share certificates are issued in the investor’s name
  4. Process typically takes up to 30 days, subject to verification
